When did this game come out? I’m still playing it and I still love it! Sometimes it’s just too much of a challenge, and I go back to playing Grid or Dirt, but if I have a whole day to spare to tinker with setups and just ‘do laps’ this is the one. You cannot just load up the game and go out to race with any expectation of getting anywhere near the front.

The cars start off with very basic suspension setups, with which you’ll never set a fast lap; so you’ve got to learn about racing suspension settings, and then you have to start changing those settings, and trying them out to see if you can find a good one.

Even in real-world racing getting a good setting is trial and error which is what all the practice sessions are for in modern racing series , and it’s no different in this game. WARNING: if you get hooked on this you can find that you’ve lost a whole day tweaking the suspension of your car, then going round the circuit again and again to see if you’re any faster, then back into the garage for more changes, or to take the changes off because they were a disaster!

If you’re any kind of a mechanical geek you’ll love this. And remember, there was no aero in , so the only grip you’re going to have is what you can get out of the mechanicals. Don’t even try to play this with a joystick or a gamepad: you really do need the control finesse that only comes from a force feedback steering-wheel and pedals. You need the force-feedback so that you can tell when your car is sliding and by how much, otherwise you’ll just come off the track.

The force feedback in this game is eerily realistic with my Logitek Formula Force steering wheel, and this allows you to slide enough to be fast, but not so much as you crash. I managed to get GPL to work under WinXP after a fashion, but it was a struggle, and it crashed a lot, but I have run it on Vista since , and it works absolutely fine.

There are more than a couple of patches that will help, and there is a whole modifying community still out there writing new circuits and cars for GPL, using it as a base for racing series up to and including the modern day. If you are into game modding, this is the base game for you.
