How to Fix: Network Discovery Is Turned Off in Windows 10

The printer IS shared, but the computer that it’s connected to isn’t discoverable. I’ve used the Network Trouble-shooter, but it doesn’t find any issues. I renamed the printer PC to a name using all upper case letters, as I had heard it might help; but no luck. I even tried a full reset of the Windows 10 operating system on the printer PC, but that didn’t fix the issue either.

I believe it was the SMB 1. While I can now see other PCs, it still appears as though my printer shows off and on in the Network folder.

I can ping the printer, and print to it, it’s just not showing in “network” so I have to manually configure. Any thoughts as to what would cause that behavior? The other interesting thing is this issue exists on all of my PCs, I have 2 laptops, and 2 desktops all running windows 10 latest build.. Is there possibly a router setting I need to enable? I am not running any third party antivirus or firewall software.

I think that you are mistaken if you think that enabling SMB1. Windows 10 does not require SMB1. That is why it is disabled by default. In fact this is no longer supported and Microsoft strongly advocates not using SMB1 because it is very old and prone to hacking.

I would strongly suggest that you disable it again. All Windows systems from Vista forward use network discovery, not the old SMB1 sharing system which relied on the computer browser service. Unfortunately networking seems to be a low priority in Windows Each new version seems to turn up a new problem or a reversion to an old problem.

Even when you get it working there is no guarantee that it will continue to work without further tweaking from time to time. It is not only printers which do not show up in the network list. PCs can also disappear. Doing a network reset will usually bring them back but that only works for PCs. This component is installed and enabled by default for all VPN connections. However, this component needs to be enabled for PPPoE and dial-up connections. It is enabled per connection and is necessary to share local folders. Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol Provides a platform for network adapter load balancing and fail-over. By combining two or more computers that are running applications into a single virtual cluster.

This protocol is used for Network Interface Card bonding, which is the combining of two ethernet cards to appear as one physical device in order to increase the available bandwidth. NIC Teaming allows you to group physical Ethernet network adapters into one or more software-based virtual network adapters. These virtual network adapters provide fast performance and fault tolerance in the event of a network adapter failure.

Also used to determine network bandwidth. Windows startup proceeds, but a message box is displayed informing you that the lltdio service has failed to start. IPv4 is a protocol used in packet-switched layer networks, such as Ethernet. It provides the logical connection between network devices by providing identification for each device. IPv6 is designed to solve many of the problems of IPv4, including mobility, auto-configuration, and overall extensibility. IPv6 expands the address space on the Internet and supports a nearly unlimited number of devices that can be directly connected to the Internet.

For many users this is an essential component. QoS Packet Scheduler A Windows platform component that is enabled by default and is designed to control the IP traffic for various network services, as a method of network bandwidth management that can monitor the importance of data packets and based on the priority of the packet.

For example, networks carrying real-time audio or video require a high level of QoS to ensure that reception is smooth and free of errors. You can control the following network properties in a network that supports QoS functions: -Throughput total bandwidth used -Latency traffic delay -Priority among types of traffic -Peak traffic, burstiness, and jitter to smooth traffic flow -Packet or cell loss and retransmission Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch the Hyper-V host and the Hyper-V guests will share the physical NIC.

The Hyper-V extensible switch supports connections from various types of virtual or physical network adapters. The connection to these types of network adapters is made through an extensible switch port. Ports are created before a virtual network adapter connection is made, and are deleted after the network adapter connection is torn down. Bridge Driver This component provides I2 bridge capability between mbb, wifi and ethernet networks.

Printer sharing used to work with the Homegroup , but that isn’t an option now. I want to share my printer on all of my networked computers, however the PC that’s connected to my printer isn’t discoverable.

Immediately after it informed me that the software was out of date so I updated it, which installed exactly the same installer I had been struggling with and it failed just as it had before. Then I got that strange conspiracy theory feeling and decided to accept to share my personal data with WD, and it installed like a charm!.

I think that WD is making more money on data mining than on selling drives. That is what I am thinking. Same here. I tried installing 15 or 20 times over the course of 30 minutes, choosing not to share my information.

It failed every time. Sure enough, choose to share and it worked perfectly. My lawyers are going to love this…. WD can you please respond here? This is ridiculous. Every time you decline the activity sharing during install, it fails to connect. Once you accept the activity sharing it installs straight away. Support Downloads Knowledge Base.
